Throughout the years, biomimicry has been implemented in areas like fashion, architecture, product design, yet barely in visual design. This project explores how we might incorporate biomimicry into visual design practises through a portfolio of experiments exploring these possibilities. Nature has gone through evolution and natural selection to develop solutions for problems that designers, engineers, and architects have spent years working on.&nbsp;Successful uses of biomimicry have already been seen in fashion and textiles design, architecture, and product design. One example of this is Velcro. From clothing, footwear, camping equipment and even playing a vital role in the moon landing, Velcro has transformed the world. In 1941, Swiss engineer George De Mestral was walking his dog when his clothes and his dog's fur got covered in burdock burrs. When he looked at these tiny burrs under a microscope, he found hundreds of tiny "hooks" that could attach to fabrics and hair. Upon discovering this, De Mestral recognised its potential and was inspired to replicate its structure for use as a fastening mechanism. The mushroom cycle starts from spore germination. Every mushroom starts as a spore, released by mature mushrooms that are carried by wind or water until they make contact with a suitable growing medium. If the conditions and environment are right, they will start to germinate. Once germinated, a strand of mycelium (also known as hyphae) will develop, and continue to expand by gathering water and nutrients to eventually produce the fruiting body - a mushroom! However, as spores are dispersed randomly, their germination is unpredictable and isn’t reliable. Therefore mushroom growers use mycelium spawn, a substrate in which the spores have already settled and started growing. The spawn used in the following experiments is grain spawn, which is mycelium placed onto sterilised grains. I sought to differentiate my experiment from this project by focusing on the processes of the growth (biomimicry), in contrast Hypha’s typeface that imitates the visual outcome of the final mycelium growth (biomorphism). Megan Wong’s An Index of Bacteria project exploring the invisible traces users have left on library books inspired me to attempt to grow mycelium on petri dishes. I wanted to observe the growth of mycelium first hand, and examine how hyphae would connect together to develop a mycelium network. <img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e1daf16a64fa798febc2216a106f350d093b92e11da7074a1b0af611293152d1/Petri-Dishes-Layered---Reishi-focus.png" data-mid="196345148" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e1daf16a64fa798febc2216a106f350d093b92e11da7074a1b0af611293152d1/Petri-Dishes-Layered---Reishi-focus.png" /> METHODS:Without knowing much about the process of cultivating mycelium on petri dishes, I researched how mycelium cultivation worked online, contacted Megan Wong and consulted Root Labs, a mycology supply business in Sydney. I asked Megan about her general process for cultivating bacteria and any advice on her photography process. At Root Labs, I asked which agar would be best for mycelium cultivation, if cultivating mycelium at home would be possible and attainable, as well as which species would be best for the fastest growth. From Megan, her tip of placing the petri dishes inside a shoe box next to a sunny window (as the bacteria, and mycelium alike required a dark, humid area) was most valuable. Photography wise, she suggested placing black paper behind the dishes and photographing them in the early morning, before direct sunlight hits. Taking in these suggestions, I also used an A3 black cardboard so I was able to place several petri dishes at once, and photographed them during the day, anytime before the sun set (normally around 9am or 3pm). Root Labs suggested that malt extract agar would be most suitable for mycelium cultivation as it is an acidic culture media designed to cultivate fungi whilst inhibiting bacterial growth. As different mushroom spawn species grew differently, I asked which species would grow fuzzier and veinier so I could have two different types of outcomes to compare. In response to this, the species Reishi was suggested to be veinier, and Pearl Giant Oysters (hereafter called PGO) would be fluffier. Both these species were also recommended as they would grow rapidly, which would be ideal for my experiments. For the typeface, I created a letter of the alphabet on a petri dish each, and alternated between the species so I would be able to observe the difference in growth for each species. The grain spawns were carefully placed using tweezers to imitate the generic form of each letter of the alphabet. On Day 3, the white mycelium was very noticeable, whereas Reishi had only just started forming some small traces of mycelium. The direction of the mycelium was always unpredictable, and was difficult to know where and how much it would start growing next. PGO is very fluffy and seems to grow outwards and upwards towards the petri dish lid, in contrast to Reishi which is much more linear and grows flat on the agar. Unfortunately, mould started growing on some of the petri dishes on Day 5. At first they were small spots of green, and eventually grew fuzzier and larger over the next two days. Interestingly, on some dishes, the mycelium was starting to take over or combine with the mould. Perhaps the strains of mycelium were even stronger than mould? Growing the typeface characters with mycelium emphasised this co-creation. The mycelium grew along the paths I created using the grain spawn, and created various unique and unpredictable type forms. Unexpected variables like bacteria growth on the petri dishes were also factors that I had expected, but did not consider deeply about how they could also influence the growth of the mycelium typeface. If I was to recreate this typeface digitally, I would include the bacteria growth as a design element of the typeface. However, if I wanted to focus on just the mycelium growth and not want external factors disturbing this process, I would redo this experiment in a more sterilised environment. Observing the mycelium grow directly made me recognise the significance of first-hand observations in comparison to secondary materials like viewing images or videos online. Initially I had considered only using online images of mycelium growth as the main precedents to inspire the development of a new typeface. However, by experiencing the growth of a natural organism first-hand, I was reminded of how there is still so much to learn from nature, even just by observing.&nbsp;DESIGN RESPONSE: From these observations, I was intrigued by the rapid speed and amount of growth of the mycelium that had happened during this short time frame. I used the documented photographs I had taken each day and compared the quantitative difference of this growth. Specifically, I focused on one letter, comparing its appearance on Day 1 and Day 7. To do this, I outlined the growth on both days and then subtracted the Day 1 outline from the Day 7 outline. This subtraction resulted in a shape that represented the overall growth of the letter. As these shapes initially grew from an existing letter, the final subtracted forms still resemble letters from the alphabet. I further experimented with these forms and emphasised the growth of mycelium by creating a three-dimensional version of each letter that incorporated the textures and colours of mycelium. Using these forms as a foundation to create a three-dimensional (3D) version of each letter, I then added on the textures and colours associated with mycelium. The ultimate result of this experiment was a 3D mycelium typeface that visually represented the quantitative growth of mycelium over the course of seven days. Consequently, it highlights one of the numerous possibilities of integrating biomimicry into visual design. The organic shapes and textures, mirroring mycelium's characteristics, accentuate the fusion of natural elements. The typeface itself possesses a dual nature, teetering on the boundary between legibility and decoration, rendering it somewhat ambiguous yet distinguishable. In this duality, the typeface reflects the multifaceted aspects of nature, combining both functionality and beauty. The successful application of biomimicry, as seen in the observation and incorporation of mycelium growth into design, illustrates how designers can embrace a perspective that extends beyond the human-centric view in their creative work. Furthermore, it opens up fresh insights into how they might approach typographic design in the future, incorporating elements inspired by nature and mycelium's unique qualities. REFLECTION FOR ACTION In this experiment, I had initially arranged each grain spawn meticulously using tweezers to shape specific letters. Consequently, the final growth of the mycelium letters was largely predetermined by these initial placements. For my next experiment, I aim to delve deeper into the unpredictability of mycelium growth. Instead of carefully arranging the grain spawn in precise and pre-designed letter shapes, I want to experiment with a more random and haphazard placement of the grain spawn. The objective of this is to observe how this less structured approach could impact the growth of the mycelium and whether the resulting letters would still be recognizable and legible. As this experiment was done in my home, the environment and weather conditions were completely uncontrolled. Temperatures were changing every day, and as the peak of spring was coming up, warmer temperatures were becoming more common. This would have significantly influenced the growth of the mycelium. However, like Experiment 1A, the PGO species grew much faster than Reishi. On Day 5, Reishi was only starting to show its visible growth, whilst PGO had already started growing clusters of mycelium. Some letters like S, T and U (PGO) had significantly grown large areas of grouped fluffy mycelium. On the other hand, other PGO letters that had begun on the same day had much less growth. As the letters S, T and U were in the same shoebox; and although each shoebox was placed directly next to each other, the temperature or sunlight may have been stronger on certain shoeboxes to influence their growth. It seemed as the spawn was more spread out and covered more surface area across the petri dish, each hyphae making up the mycelium network was able to connect with more hyphae. Therefore the expansion of the letters in this experiment was much greater than Experiment 1A. From these observations, I made a comparative catalogue to view the difference in the growths of Experiment 1A and 1B easily. This catalogue shows the comparisons for each letter of the alphabet from Day 1 and Day 7.Comparative Catalogue of Mycelium Cultivated Typography REFLECTION: The key observations from this experiment were the unpredictable nature of mycelium, no matter how controlled each variable would be. Even if the environment, conditions, and placement of each grain spawn was controlled and the same every time the experiment was conducted, the final growth would always be different. Ultimately, the amount of growth and direction of the mycelium could never be controlled. Evidently, if the variables were all changed, the final growth and form of each mycelium letter would be seemingly endless. This incited my curiosity for the possibilities of using these properties of unpredictable mycelium growth creating endless versions of different forms and shapes to develop a generative typeface that could produce infinite typefaces. DESIGN RESPONSE: This reflection inspired a design concept for a generative typeface that emulates the unpredictable nature of mycelium growth, generating an array of mycelium formations. This generative typeface would create a new typeface everytime the process was repeated, like how the mycelium would grow differently in every experiment. I explored this idea by starting with an existing typeface to use as a base structure for growing this new mycelium typeface. I documented the mycelium growth in Experiment 1A and 1B in a Comparative Catalogue, visually comparing the growth of each letter from Day 1 to Day 7. This catalogue was then used as a visual reference to inspire mutations or the placement of new elements, shapes and features onto the base typeface. Unexpected variables like bacteria could also be included in this stage of adding or changing the structure of the base typeface. This process enables the generation of a new typeface each time a different reference is used from the Comparative Catalogue, as the mycelium growth will always be different in each experiment and letter. The outcomes of this experiment revealed that I was reasonably successful in creating a new form for the letter. As I only trialled this proposed concept for one letter, I am unable to make a thorough judgement on the success of creating a whole typeface, as a typeface typically consists of all the letters, numbers and symbols. Therefore, it is recommended to extend this experiment to cover the entire alphabet and reevaluate its success. Nonetheless, from the results produced to date, I concluded that the idea of a generative typeface system was successful in creating new typefaces. This process allowed me to quickly create new and unique letterforms using an existing precedent (the Comparative Catalogue) as a visual guide. Guides help visualise or represent ideas or themes that could be difficult to see or comprehend. For many designers, thinking or confirming a concept is probably the most challenging stage before being able to design. Using a guide, like the Comparative Catalogue, initiates this process and allows the designer to then input their own styles, rules and aesthetics into the development of the typeface. Typically guides have limitations such as lack of details or accuracy. However, in this case, these limitations aid the design process. Instead, it allows for more freedom and creativity to be included during the development and iteration stages of the typeface. This Comparative Catalogue reflects the natural processes of mycelium growth, and by using it as a guide, designers can create various organic typefaces. During these experiments, a more-than-human perspective was incorporated through collaboration with non-humans - the mycelium. The mycelium grew along the paths I had formed using the grain spawn and created various unpredictable forms. The organic shapes created from this experiment are unique to the features and growth of mycelium and may not have the same with a human-centred approach. Working and thinking with non-humans allows us to think beyond the established human boundaries for designing and solving problems we may not be able to resolve by only thinking from a human-centred perspective. This will prevent external bacteria and substances from going into the petri dish.Label the species, date and title onto masking tape. Place the masking tape on top of the closed petri dish.Place dish against black cardboard and take a photograph from a birds eye view of the petri dish.TYPEFACE: To create a mycelium typeface, place the cultured grain spawns (of your chosen species) in the shape of a letter of the alphabet, starting from "A" using the sterilised tweezer onto the centre of a petri dish.Repeat steps 3-5.Once all letters have been formed on each petri dish, place them inside a shoebox. Depending on the size of the shoebox, you may be able to fit around 4-6 petri dishes lying flat down. Do not place petri dishes on top of each other.Close the shoebox and leave in a dark, humid area. Leave the dishes to incubate and grow mycelium.Continue to observe and record the changes in the petri dish everyday. His work was analysed and modified to develop my own rules and guides for this Mushroom kit grid system.&nbsp; METHODS:After purchasing the mushroom kit from my local hardware store, I did some further research online to understand the process of growing mushrooms more clearly. Initially, I had thought my success rate of growing mushrooms would be quite low, as the majority of the reviews for this kit had mentioned that it was unsuccessful and impossible to grow. &nbsp; Following the instructions provided from the kit with the research I had done online, I placed the kit in the sink of my laundry room. After setting up the kit, I would mist it twice everyday, once in the early morning and at sunset. I covered the sink with a large cardboard box that had been flattened down. However, to my pleasant surprise by Day 7, clusters of white mycelium were prominently growing on the soil! These growths were most noticeable around the corners and sides of the box. There was also condensation on the plastic sheet separating the soil and the box of the mushroom kit. This meant that the temperatures were humid enough to create condensation. A strong musky scent from the mushroom kit was also becoming quite prominent. In another week, on Day 13, the mycelium had expanded to cover most of the soil, and small pinheads around the size of my pinky nail had started appearing. In half a day, they had risen and grown at an exponentially fast rate. The mushrooms in this kit were all starting to grow and expand at different rates, as some other clusters of the mycelium had only just started growing small pinheads. I also touched these mushroom caps and was surprised by how sturdy and hard they felt.&nbsp; On Day 19, the majority of the mushrooms had grown into large balls, and most of the white caps had started turning brown and developing an interesting spiralled pattern. Some mushrooms had also started growing from the same connected stem. By Day 22, the mushrooms had grown so much that they were squishing each other. Some caps had grown on top of others, and some had become deformed by being crushed by the others. It was interesting that once removed, the mushrooms growing under these had brown dust on them. Taking knowledge from my secondary research, I concluded that these were the mushroom spores that had dispersed from mushroom gills.&nbsp; REFLECTION:The main discovery from the experiment is the notable diversity in the way the mushrooms grew. Each day brought a different pattern of growth, and each stage of this growth looked visually unique from the previous ones. It was fascinating to observe how the various stages of growth could be so distinct while ultimately coming together to create the mature mushroom. This observation of different growth stages contributing to the formation of a single mushroom inspired the idea of a mushroom grid system. This grid system, like the different stages of mushroom growth, would consist of various components or stages that, when combined, would help in constructing the final layout. In essence, the idea is to use this natural variation and progression as a model for creating a structured design system that can lead to diverse and visually interesting layouts. DESIGN RESPONSE: From this key insight, I was inspired to develop a mushroom grid system for print and web design. This grid system is structured and divided into steps, complete with rules and guidelines. Its purpose is to provide clear instructions on how to design layouts for both print and web media. What makes this grid system unique is that it mimics the visual characteristics and organisation patterns I observed while growing mushrooms. In other words, the rules and guides within the grid system replicate the natural growth stages of mushrooms, using them as a model for design. This grid system demonstrates how the concept of biomimicry, drawing inspiration from nature (in this case, mushrooms), can be effectively integrated into visual design, particularly in the creation of grid layouts. This approach allows for more organic, visually appealing, and effective design, drawing from the patterns and structures found in the natural world. However, it had limitations, primarily related to how content could be placed within it. The experiment's rules established in the mushroom grid system predetermined the content placement in Step 3 by aligning the content hierarchy with the hierarchy observed in the growth of mushrooms.This lack of flexibility meant that there wasn't much room for adjusting or changing the layout to better accommodate the content. Instead, future direction to improve the outcomes from this grid system might be to use less text, which might allow for more refined and visually appealing results. The limitations encountered in this experiment may have also stemmed from the constraints imposed by the pre-established grid structure, which restricted the placement of content within the layout. It is possible that this approach did not accurately mirror the natural process of mushroom growth, as observations from the mushroom growth kit revealed that the production and placement of mushrooms were inherently unpredictable. REFLECTION FOR ACTION:In light of this, a different avenue for experimentation might involve replicating the natural formation of mushroom growth. This would involve closely studying the primary element of mushroom growth—the mycelium—and using its existing patterns to create a more organic and nature-inspired layout. Such an approach could potentially yield a more harmonious and less constrained result compared to the earlier grid-based method.
